Water, the basis of all bodily processes

Water is perhaps the most underestimated “nutrient”, but it is essential for almost all processes in the body. A very large part of the human body consists of water. Every cell, every organ and every biological system depends on sufficient hydration.
Although water does not provide energy like macronutrients and does not contain vitamins or minerals like micronutrients, it is indispensable for transport, regulation and balance in the body.

Signals that the body has too little fluid

Even mild dehydration can affect how the body functions. Possible signs of insufficient hydration include:
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • concentration problems
  • dry skin or dry mouth
  • dark urine
  • dizziness
  • reduced physical performance
Many people experience these complaints without immediately realizing it a lack of fluid can play a role in this.

An orthomolecular and metabolic perspective

From an orthomolecular and systems-oriented perspective, water plays an important role in the internal balance of the body.
Water is needed for
  • transport of nutrients to cells
  • disposal of waste
  • enzyme reactions in metabolism
  • support of intestinal function
  • regulation of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium
When the fluid balance is disturbed, this can affect the cell metabolism, energy production and the functioning of the nervous system.
In addition, hydration works closely with minerals (electrolytes). Water alone is not always enough; the body also needs sodium, potassium and other minerals to properly transport fluid in and out of the cells.

Water and energy in the body
Good hydration also supports the energy management of the body. In the mitochondria – the energy factories of the cells – chemical reactions are constantly taking place that depend on a well-regulated water and electrolyte balance.
When the body is insufficiently hydrated, processes such as
  • energy production
  • detoxification
  • temperature regulation
less efficient.

Hydration as part of health
Drinking enough water is therefore a simple but important basis for health. For many people this means Drink water regularly throughout the day, tailored to activity, temperature and individual needs.
Together with wholesome nutrition, good hydration is an important support for the body to to produce energy, remove waste and maintain internal balance.

Water is essential for your body to create energy!

But so is salt. Read here why that is the case.
